At times the need may arise for you to enter the crawlspace under your house. Before you do, though, you must make sure you are prepared for the things you could encounter in a space like this. Here are some of them:

There may be numerous hazards lurking in an under-house crawlspace. You may well find standing water, mold, fungi, and even sewage! As you know, exposure to any of these can pose a health risk, especially being in close proximity to them, which you would be in such a cramped space.

Animals, rodents, and insects are another danger you may encounter in a crawlspace. Dark, damp and mostly undisturbed spaces like this provide an ideal habitat for many creatures, some of which may be poisonous. If you enter the crawlspace, you could find yourself face to face with one of these creatures. If the animal feels threatened or cornered, the situation could quickly become dangerous, and it will be difficult to move out of the way in such a tight space.

If there is the slightest risk of structural damage to the house, you should avoid entering the under-house crawlspace until you have had it assessed by a professional. It is better to be safe and not place yourself at any risk.

Make sure you have the appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing on before entering the crawlspace and always let someone else in the home know where you are and what you are doing so that they can help you if you run into difficulty.
