It can become a real problem for homeowners when the beautiful landscaping they have spent so long cultivating suddenly starts being attacked by wildlife. If this happens to you, then you will understand the frustration. But what can you do to discourage wildlife from your property without hurting it? Here are a few suggestions:

First, try to identify the animal or rodent causing the damage, as not all the wildlife coming onto your property will be damaging it. Identifying the animal will also enable you to find out the best deterrent for it. Most of the time a rodent or animal will be attracted to some type of food source found in your yard. It could even be a plant or shrub that they enjoy. When you find the food source you can then eliminate it, making your outside space less appealing to the unwanted guest.

Barriers that are designed to keep out wildlife may be another non-chemical option for you to try. Barrier deterrents come in different forms. For example, it could be a sound or something visible that the creature is afraid of and so stays away from.

If you have been unsuccessful with any of these non-chemical approaches, what can you try next? The next step is to try and catch the creature and relocate it. Before attempting this though, contact your local wildlife management office or animal control center who can advise you on the right course of action to take.
