If the home is not adequately prepared for aging seniors it can be a dangerous place. Falls are the leading cause of death for seniors at home. There are many things that can be done to help make the home a safer place.
Here are a few things that can be done to safely house proof for the elderly:
- Eliminate the stairs. If possible create zero stair entries to the home. Not to be accomplished by getting a rant to entrances that might already have stairs.
- Install sturdy railings. Staircases should have railings placed on both sides and they should be strong enough to support a person’s full body weight.
- Have appliances within reach. All appliances should be placed at waist level so seniors don’t have to struggle to get things that are either too high or too low. Frequently used kitchen items should be in low drawers rather than high cabinets to make them more reachable
- Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Keep a fire extinguisher in an easy-to-reach place in case of cooking mishaps. Also, have a smoke detector in the kitchen and one on each level of the house.
- Reduce shower danger. Install grab bars in the shower in case someone starts to slip. Using a shower seat is also safer than standing in a slick tub. Install a handheld shower to make it easier to shower especially when seated.
