In this month’s first blog we discussed some of the preliminary steps you should take when returning to a home that has been flooded. This time, we are going to consider a few more essential steps you will need to take.

It is extremely important to be aware of the dangers existing in floodwater. Even when the water has drained away, it will leave behind all kinds of hazardous bacteria, such as is found in sewage, etc. not to mention a ton of debris and dirt. Having this in mind will help you to put safety first as you begin the clean-up process. Make sure you have all the protective clothing you need, which should include a good pair of gloves, a breathing mask, and very sturdy footwear.
As you sort through damaged belongings, be aware that they will also contain dangerous bacteria. Although it will be possible to clean and salvage some items, other items should be thrown out, mattresses are one such item.
Always err on the side of caution when deciding what to keep and what to throw out. For example, there may be food or drink items that you are uncertain about whether or not they have come into contact with floodwater. In this case, it is better just to throw the items out.
We hope that no one has to experience a disaster like this, but knowing what to do will be invaluable if you do find yourself in this situation.
